Most CTE Courses are 9 weeks (exceptions: Exploring Computer Science & Keyboarding & Basic Word Processing. Courses are open to all grade levels as long as required prerequisite is met.
Information Technology Education -
LEVEL 1: Keyboarding and Basic Word Processing; Digital Literacy (Semester Long) - So you can text and tweet without looking, but how are you with typing emails and research papers/reports? This course is designed to teach students the touch method of typing at a rate of 30 WPM or greater. Basic word processing and formatting skills are also a part of the curriculum to support students in being able to communicate in our global society.
LEVEL II: Intro to Office Productivity --Completion of Level I required This course provides hands-on instruction in software applications including word processing, presentation software, spreadsheets, and databases
LEVEL III: Office Productivity and Applications --Completion of Level II required This course provides advanced level instruction on the use of software applications including web page design, word processing, desktop publishing, presentation software, spreadsheets, and databases. This class extends your skills and launches you firmly into the digital world!
Exploring Computer Science** - (Completion of Level II required, Semester long) This course is intended to familiarize students with the general concepts of computing and the thinking practices of information scientists. Authentic visual and interactive projects expose students to various computer science course topics, including hardware, software, web page design, basic coding and computer programming, and data analysis. Math concepts are reinforced throughout this elective.
**Please note that Exploring Computer Science is not currently offered at CMS; however, the other three IT courses, FBLA club, and class visits from business partners will expose students to the "in demand" pathways of coding and web design.
Business Education -
Exploring Business Procedures & Leadership
This course exposes students to proper etiquette, communication, leadership and teambuilding practices to excel as a professional. Proper methods of searching for, gaining and maintaining employment are also explored. Work-based learning activities like service learning projects and hands-on leadership workshops offer authentic experiences for students to gain skills.
Exploring Business Activities & Careers
This course exposes students to five of the business pathways they can pursue: finance, Information Technology (IT), business management, marketing, & small business management/entrepreneurship. Soft skills, career exploration activities, and business concepts are taught through a combination of traditional lessons and hands-on work based learning activities.
Career Development Education
Level 1: Exploring Personal Characteristics and Careers
What do you want to do when you enter the working world? This class will help you begin to find out by exploring different careers and their educational pathways. Students will further explore their interests, values, personality & skills and match them with a variety of career possibilities. Students will also develop an understanding of the skills needed to be a successful employee. Hands on "soft-skills" workshops and a Create a College project based approach are integrated to help students develop these skills through real-world connections.
Family & Consumer Sciences
Exploring Relationships & Childcare (1st quarter, 3rd quarter)
Students learn about interpersonal relationships by understanding themselves, their families, and ways to communicate. Students also become familiar with the stages of development and the care of young children as they pursue Red Cross Babysitter Certification.
Exploring Nutrition & Wellness (2nd quarter)
Students explore nutritional food choices, kitchen basics, meal planning and preparation techniques. Students participate in hands on labs to develop their food service, food safety and sanitation skills. Careers and introductory curriculum related to the Culinary Arts and Hospitality industries are explored. NC EfoodHandler Certification may be offered with successful completion of this course
Exploring Finance & Hospitality (3rd quarter)
Students develop their financial literacy through an online EverFi Vault program. Topics covered include responsible money choices, income and careers, planning & money management, credit & borrowing, insurance & safety management and saving and investing. During the hospitality portion, students learn the basics for food service, food safety and sanitation in culinary and hospitality settings.
Exploring Apparel & Interior Design (4th quarter)
Students explore factors influencing clothing choices, basic clothing construction techniques, the function of marketing clothing. Students also learn interior design through investigation of basic design principles, sustainable action and managing a living space.
